This month's topics:

We have waded through hundreds of articles and opinion pieces since the 7.0 earthquake (and 50+ aftershocks) rattled Haiti. It is very difficult for most of us to comprehend the massive scale of the disaster and already the frustration and sniping has begun between countries and sadly will continue in the years to come. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by this traumatic event including the volunteers, military, and officials involved in the rescue, relief and recovery efforts.

Below are some articles we found of interest along with some helpful sites for Responders plus some media links to keep tabs on Haiti and global disasters in general.

Latest numbers
… The Haitian government raised the confirmed death toll to 150,000 late Monday and officials said they fear the death toll could be as high as 200,000. HaitiNews.net 25-Jan-10

Rainy season looming
… Haiti's President Rene Preval urged the world to urgently airlift 200,000 more tents and 36 million ready-to-eat packs before the rainy season starts in May. Aid organizations fear disease could spread like wildfire if thousands are still living in tent cities when the rains come. AFP 26-Jan-10

Haiti’s Disasters: Natural and Man-Made
… Before the hurricanes, flooding, mudslides, and earthquakes that have befallen Haiti in the last decade came the man-made disaster. Ineffective political institutions, a predatory state, corrupt and venal politicians, and a weak civil society have conspired to wreck Haiti’s western third of the island of Hispaniola. You can literally see dysfunction from space: satellite photos of the island that Haiti shares with the Dominican Republic show the denuded hillsides on the Haitian side of the border. The American 14-Jan-10

Imagining a quake disaster in the U.S.
… The chaos in Haiti has been described by those on the ground as "unimaginable." But let’s try to imagine what the equivalent devastation might look like in the U.S. MSNBC 22-Jan-10

Low-tech radios connect some Haitians
Much has been made about the role flashier technologies like Twitter, Skype and text messaging have played in helping disaster victims find loved ones and communicate with international aid workers. But it is worth noting that, when all else fails, the low-tech hum of a radio frequency is sometimes the only line of communication that's open. CNN 20-Jan-10

Facebook helping to raise Haiti quake relief funds, but warns of hoax
… Facebook discovered there were several member-generated quake pages that promised donations for every fan that signed up. A Facebook spokesman said he did not know whether those were legitimate, but cautioned members to be wary. The FBI has also warned about "individuals representing themselves as surviving victims or officials asking for donations via e-mail or social networking sites." SFGate 18-Jan-10
